History
History of the Wincanton Group
Wincanton was founded in 1925. Its business initially consisted of the maintenance of dairy plant and equipment for the milk industry. In the late 1950s, Wincanton diversified into milk haulage, principally for the Milk Marketing Board, and subsequently into other areas of tanker distribution, including the distribution of fuels. In the 1970s, as part of the Unigate Group, Wincanton moved into temperature controlled distribution for manufacturers, and continued to expand its range of logistics services through the 1980s. In 1993, Wincanton acquired Glass Glover plc, which considerably strengthened its presence in the retail logistics sector and in warehouse management generally.
In 2001, Wincanton demerged from its then parent company Uniq plc (formerly Unigate plc) and listed on the London Stock Exchange.
In 2002, Wincanton acquired P&O Trans European. This acquisition represented a major step change for Wincanton and supported its strategy of becoming a leading European logistics provider as well as expanding its geographic reach and range of services.
Since demerging from Uniq plc and acquiring P&O Trans European, Wincanton has continued to develop its geographic coverage and service offering, both organically and by acquisition. Recent in-fill acquisitions have strengthened its presence in France, developed the high tech service offering in Germany, entered the construction sector in the UK, expanded its home delivery capabilities and strengthened its container transport services in the UK.
